1. First Red Scare

   • After WWI
   • American's suspicious of those perceived to be disloyal, such as radicals and immigrants
   • End of WWI, workers began to strike, which worried American people

2. Second Red Scare (McCarthyism)

   • Came after WWII
   • Driven by US politician McCarthy
     • Brilliant at stirring fear
   • Started due to fear of communism from Cold War tensions
   • McCarthy stated that 'the state department...is thoroughly infested with communists

3. McCarthy

   • US politician
   • Had many people questioned about their beliefs
   • 1953 - Civil Service Investigation by order of Eisenhower, McCarthy and HUAC
