Tides

  1. What

    • Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth.
  2. How

    • The gravitational attraction of the moon causes the oceans to bulge out in the direction of the moon. Another bulge occurs on the opposite side, since the Earth is also being pulled toward the moon (and away from the water on the far side). Since the earth is rotating while this is happening, two tides occur each day.
  3. Types

    • diurnal tides, Semi-diurnal tides, mixed tides, Neap Tide , Spring Tide
  4. High and Low

    • At a low tide the water is the furthest it can go back out to see.when the tide is high it's the furthest inland the water can be.
  5. Effects

    • Tides can bring in sand, shells and ocean sediment at high tide and leave them behind when the tide goes out. This can be important to repair coastline and bring in nourishments for sea plants and marine animals.
