Resumen del Recurso

Cells - Prokaryotic
  1. Ultrstructure of Cells
    1. Electron Microscopes are used to study cell structure
      1. Many organisms still have Prokaryotic cells, including all bacteria
        1. These cells have no nucleus
          1. The name Prokaryotic means 'before the nucleus'
            1. Prokaryotic cells divide in two by a process called binary fission
            2. Functions of parts of a Prokaryotic cells
              1. Cell Wall
                1. Forms a protective outer layer that prevents damage from outside and also bursting if internal pressure is too high.
                2. Plasma Membrane
                  1. Controls entry and exit of substances, pumping some of them in by active transport.
                  2. Cytoplasm
                    1. Contains enzymes that catalyse the chemical reactions of metabolism and contains DNA in a region called the nucleoid.
                    2. Pili
                      1. Hair-like structures projecting from the cell wall, when connected to another bacterial cell they can be used to pull the cells together.
                      2. Flagella
                        1. Solid protein structures, with a corkscrew shape, projecting from the cell wall, which rotate to cause locomotion.
                        2. Ribosomes
                          1. Small granular structures than synthesise proteins by translating messenger RNA. some proteins stay in the cell and others are secreted.
                          2. Nucleoid
                            1. Region of the cytoplasm that contains naked DNA, which is the genetic information of the cell.
