2. Propagation
  1. Two repeated steps that build up the desired product in a side-reaction
    1. Step 1
      1. Generates an alkyl radical and a halogen chloride
        Methyl radical and HCl
    2. Step 2
      1. Generates the desired product and regenerates a halogen radical
        Chloromethane and chlorine radical
  2. One molecule and one radical to another molecule and another radical
    1. 1 ==> 1
3. Termination
  1. Two radicals to make a stable product
  2. Radicals into a molecule
    1. 2 ==> 0
Radical substitution is difficult to control
1. Lots of radicals so lots of different products
Conditions
1. Ultraviolet light
2. 300 degrees Celsius
A mixture of products are produce by random collisions between radicals, but there tends to only be one desirable product.
