Spanish Civil War - CAUSES
  1. In the time period before the Civil War, Spain loved to fight.
    1. Between 1806 and 1936 - there were 19 military coups
      1. Some Spaniards answered to Rome (Catholics), some wanted the central gov't to control everything, and others wanted a monarchy
        1. Mainly : conservatives vs. liberals
      2. 1886 - Don Pablo begins advocating for an anarchy revolution. The idea spread..
        1. Anarchism went underground after police fired on anarchists.
          1. Harder to police...
            1. turned into single acts of terrorism.
        2. 20th century - workers began to strike.
          1. this really only led to arrests, violence, and hostility towards the church.
            1. The workers wanted to form a confederation of labor.
              1. Spain said no, sent troops to strike them down
          2. The Rich people of Spain owned most of the land, causing unrest in rural areas.
            1. Led to unrest and violence
              1. Unrest made people radicals
                1. Some joined socialist union, others turned to anarchism etc.
                  1. WAR.
            2. CATHOLICISM
              1. Spain was Catholic, and the gov't was aligned with the church.
                1. Church was alarmed by radical attacks.
                2. After so many military coups, Spain reduced the size of their army
                  1. After a loss in Morocco, they turned back to a large military who oppressed civilians
                  2. A strong separatist movement remained in Spain.
                    1. Spain was divided.
                      1. And so was Europe - Communism vs. Fascism.
                        1. This increased foreign interest in Spanish War.
                      2. SHORT TERM CAUSES
                        1. Farm probs.
                          1. Land owners had a hard time under new regime because of labor laws
                            1. Countryside became a battle ground.
                            2. CITY probs
                              1. Army continued to beat down strikes.
                                1. Communists and Anarchists worked together to fight police.
                                2. Religious probs
                                  1. Church hated new reform
                                    1. Lost money, religious items were removed
                                  2. By 1936 Spain was divided.
                                    1. Former Finance Minister - Sotelo - killed (right wing) - The perfect spark for war.
                                      1. Prompted military coup by Sanjuro, Maro and Fransisco Franco.
