1. The process by which ionic substances are broken down into simpler substances by using electricity

   • Electro - Electricity
   • Lysis -Breakdown

2. Definitions

   • Reduction
     • A gain in electrons
   • Oxidisation
     • Loss of electrons
   • Ion
     • Positively or negatively charged particles
   • Ionic substance
     • Formed when a metal reacts with a non-meta and contains ionsl

3. For electrolysis to be possible, the ions must be able to move

   • This happens when the ionic substance is melted or dissolved in water

4. What happens?

   • Positively charged ions move to the negative electrode
     • There they gain electrons and are reduced
   • Negatively charged electrons move to the positive electrode
     • They then lose electrons and are oxidised
