Resumen del Recurso

Momentum
  1. Definition: A measure of flow rate times the velocity of the fluid.
    1. Useful Equation: F= m*(Vout - Vin), where m is mass flow rate, which can also be expressed as m = pQ.
      1. m = pQ. p is density of fluid and Q is the flow rate of the fluid.
      2. Industrial Application
        1. In refinery, knowing how large the force a fluid can exert can determine what brackets and suitable supports to be used to hold the pipelines.
          1. In petroleum, knowing the force fluid exerts in the pipeline, can be used to determine the design of the casing of the pipe.
            1. Momentum is also a measure of the sum of forces that fluid exerts, so knowing the total force can be used to determine the equilibrium reaction within a system.
            2. Below: Image describing the momentum of fluid in a system. By equation, as Q is constant, the one with a larger A will have smaller velocity.
