    1. Vector quantities have both magnitude and an associated direction
      1. Examples of vector quantities
        1. Force

                  1. Speed= Distance/ Time
                    1. Speed measurement practicals
                      1. Ruler and stopwatch- Ruler measures distance travelled, stopwatch measures time taken
                        1. Light gates- Size of object measured with ruler, light gate connects to a timer which gives the reading
                          1. Video analysis- Distance moved from frame to frame observed on a ruler in the pictures, time between frames is known
                          2. Acceleration= change in velocity/ time taken
                            1. (final velocity) squared- (initial velocity) squared = 2 x acceleration x distance
                              1. An object will only accelerate if a resultant force acts on it
                                1. Gravitational attraction provides the centripetal force needed to keep a planet in orbit around the Sun
                                2. Scalar Quantites
                                  1. Scalar quantities only have a magnitude or size
                                    1. Examples of scalar quantities
                                      1. Temperature
                                        1. Mass
                                          1. Energy
                                            1. Distance
                                              1. Speed
                                                1. Density
                                              2. Newtons Laws
                                                1. First law of motion- an object remains in the same state of motion unless a resultant force acts on it
                                                  1. If the forces acting on an object are balanced, the resultant force is zero
                                                  2. Second law of motion- resultant force= mass x acceleration
                                                    1. The ratio of force over acceleration is called inertial mass. Inertial mass is a measure of how difficult it is to change the velocity of an object
                                                      1. Practical
                                                      2. Third law of motion- every action has an equal or opposite reaction
                                                        1. Weight= mass x gravitational field strength
                                                        2. Momentum
                                                          1. Momentum = mass x velocity
                                                            1. In a closed system (not affected by external forces) total momentum before an event = total momentum after an event
                                                              1. Force= change in momentum/ time taken
                                                              2. Motion of Vehicles
                                                                1. Stopping distance= thinking distance+ breaking distance
                                                                  1. Reaction time- ruler drop test
                                                                    1. When a force is applied to the breaks of a vehicle, there is work done by the friction between the breaks and the wheel. This reduces the kinetic energy of the vehicle.
                                                                      1. Kinetic energy = 0.5 x mass x (velocity) squared
                                                                        1. Work Done= Kinetic Energy
