   • Phonological short-term memory deficits negatively impact learning of novel phonological forms
     • Associated with learning impairments code-specific relation between short term retention and long-term learning.
     • Example: Learning new words or names

3. Language Comprehension

   • Deficits in comprehending certain sentence types in semantic STM
     • Difficulty with sentences when several adjectives come before the noun
       • Example: "rusty, old, red wagon" vs. "the wagon was rusty, old, and red"
     • Difficulty with sentences when several nouns come before the verb
       • Example: " glasses, vases, and mirrors cracked" vs."the movers cracked the glasses, vases, and mirrors"

4. Language Production

   • Speech is produced in fluent stretches (not one word at a time)
     • This implies a degree of planning of one or two words in advanced (Advanced Planning)
       • Advanced planning requires STM resources to plan several words prior to articulation
   • Deficits in Semantic STM
     • Difficultly in producing adjective-noun phrases
       • Example: "long blonde hair"
     • Difficulty in producing conjoined - noun phrases
       • Example: "the ball and the block moved" vs. "the ball moved"
   • Studies show that speakers plan at a phrase level, attempting to plan all of the lexical - semantic representations for a phrase prior to beginning phonological retrieval
