Option 5: Decision Making

1. I'm taking my afternoon set of vitals on a patient

   • I noticed my pt's BP is 174/92, & the rest of the vital signs read within normal range. This is when I realize a decision needs to be made
     • I inform my pt of their BP reading, & ask what a typical BP reading is for them
       • They state they are hypertensive & are on daily medication to regulate their BP, & the medication works really well for them.
         • I tell them I'll go check with their nurse (& my instructor) about administering their BP medication.
           • After talking with the pt's RN, and my instructor, we decide it is time to administer their anti-hypertensive medication
             • Check the 7 Rights to Medication 3 times, & administer the anti-hypertensive. I check their BP again in 30 minutes to check for the effectiveness of the anti-hypertensive medication
               • The outcome is the patient's BP reads within normal range & I let the nurse know the reading
