Chapter 12: Training.
Methods of training.
- In-house or on-the-job training takes place at the workplace where the work is being done. Normally they will be trained by an experienced worker. The advantages of this are you can get employees to work straight away. It also motivates the experienced worker. A disadvantage of this is that there may be too many distractions for the new employee.
- Off-the-job training takes place away from the job, for example in a college or training centre if the business is large enough to finance this. Advantages is that it makes the employee feel valued and they will be receiving training from experienced people. However it may not be as practical and they could have work building up. They may think some off the stuff being taught is irrelevant.
Choosing the most appropriate type of training.
- All of these things need to be considered: what the training is, the safety of the employees, the cost, the time the training will take, possible disruption to customers or employees. Some training must be physical, some will take place in the workplace and some will be training courses at different venues.
Induction training.
- Induction training is where a business introduces new employees to the workplace so that they learn what is expected of them and learn what to do in emergencies. Lots of information is given to them, they may receive a tour of the building. It is like a 'taster day'.
The benefits of training.
- Training is a way of motivation, so they will perform better. The employee will be building up more skills, so this training could lead to the promotion of an employee. It is important that employees are retrained to help avoid the threat of redundancy.
