Unit 4 Big Data & Privacy
Frequency Analysis
- How often a letter occurs in the English Language & compares it to the letters in the message.
Encryption
- A process of encoding messages to keep them secret, so only "authorized" parties can read it.
Moore's Law
- The observation that computing power roughly doubkes every two years
Big Data
- A broad term for datasets so large or complex that traditional data processing applications are inadequate
Caeser's Cipher
- A technique for encryption that shift the alphabet by some number of characters
Encryption Key
- What you use to change from the original text
Decryption
- A process that reverses encryption, taking a secret message & reproducing the original text.
Encryption Algorithm
- Following a set of rules to encrypt the message
Computationally Hard
- A "hard" problem for a computer is one in which it cannot arrive at a solution in a reasonable amount of time
Too Hard
- Too long to crack with a certain amout of time
Symmetric Encryption
- Secret has to be agreed on in private before
Public Key
- A value that can be used to encrypt a message. However, only when combined with a mathematically-related privately, can the message be decrypted.
Security Protocol
- Protects us on the web. Uses public encryption to protect data.
Asymmetric Encryption
- A type of cryptographic based on algorithms that require two keys-one of which is secret (or private) & one of which is public (feely known to others)
Public Key Cryptography
- Encrypting & Decrypting messages when the encryption is public but the keys are secret
Private Key
- The complementary key to a public key that is used to decrypt a message
Modulo
- The name of the mathematical operation. Modulo gives the remainder for dividing two numbers. Ex. 17 MOD 13 is 4
