Propositional and Predicate Logic

  1. Logic

    • a symbolic system that provides rules for reasoning and inference
    • used to represent certain aspects of meaning very precisely
    • symbols are used to replace ambiguity
  2. Propositional Logic

    • concerned with how he truth of complex propositions relate to the truth of its propositional parts
    • propsiton is assumed to be atomic
  3. Unary sentence operators

    • expressions that can be added to a sentence to make a new sentence
    • eg sentential negation, modals, certain adverbs
  4. Binary sentence connectives

    • expressions that can be put between two sentences to make a new sentence
      • eg and/but/if/if and only
  5. connectives and operators in logic

    • negation - it is not the case that = ~
    • conjunction - and -
    • disjunction - or - v
    • conditional - if -
    • biconditional - if and only if -
