Arguing
Deductive
- Valid if the premises are true
- If the premises are true the conclusion HAS to be true
- (the conclusion is entailed by the premises)
- If the premises are true the conclusion HAS to be true
- Example
- There are gnomes in my house
- My house is in London
- Therefore there are gnomes in London
- Valid if the premises are true
Inductive
- Successful if the premises are true
- If the premises are true the conclusion is more likely to be true
- An inductive argument cannot validate but rather strongly support and idea
- If the premises are true the conclusion is more likely to be true
- Example
- I like computers
- I like science
- I will want to do computer science at collage
- Successful if the premises are true
