Variables and measures
Measurement is the process of assigning numbers to objects, events or situations. The instruments are selected to measure specific variables of a study.
Nominal scale measure: contains values that indicate a relationship with one or more categories (for example, gender, marital status)
Ordinal scale measure: contains non-numeric values that indicate an order. (for example, gold, silver, bronze)
Discrete scale measurement: can only take a finite number of values between Two values of a characteristic. (for example, number of children 1,2,3,4)
Continuous scale measurement: can take an infinite number of values Between two values of a characteristic. (for example, height 1.63m, 1.78m)
Reliability: robustness of the measurement method; Express the measure of that a measure provides similar results when it is performed more than once under the same conditions.
- It includes reproducibility, internal consistency and limits of agreement.
Validity: expresses the degree to which a measure measures what it is intended for. Includes appearance (facial) validity, content, construction and criteria.
