Measurement, Validity and Reliability

104 resources created by 97 users

This Measurement, Validity and Reliability page on GoConqr gathers community-made mind maps, quizzes, flashcards, slides and notes, from scales of measurement and measurement error to types of validity, test construction and Item Response Theory. It's built for university students working through research methods and teachers after ready-made material. There are over 100 resources here, including more than 10 quizzes, over 40 mind maps and more than 30 flashcard decks. Pick a topic, try a quiz to find your gaps, then make your own set.

About Measurement, Validity and Reliability

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The resources here deal with how researchers turn ideas into numbers, and how they judge whether those numbers can be trusted. The mind map Measurement of behavior sets out the scales of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio) and the idea that an observed score is a true score plus measurement error. The mind map X = T + B + W + Er goes further, separating bias from validity error.

Where to start

Begin with the basics of measurement, then move to quality. A sensible order is:

  1. Read Measurement of behavior and the mind map Four Scales of Measurment.
  2. Work through the flashcard deck Chapter 8 Measurements, which follows the steps of the measurement process, from concepts to operational definitions.
  3. Move on to reliability and validity with Types of Reliability and TYPES OF VALIDITY.
  4. Finish with the mind map Threats to Validity and the one on internal and external validity threats.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a mind map first, then test yourself. The quiz Validity Lecture 3 asks what constructs are and checks construct under-representation against construct-irrelevant variance. Reliability and Validity Quick Test is a short check once you have covered both ideas. Wherever a quiz catches you out, go back to the matching map and read that branch again.

Going deeper

Several maps look at test building and theory. Scale construction 2 covers cleaning data, including duplicate cases and missing responses. Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Generalizability Theory (G-Theory) suit students who want the measurement models, and the quiz Item Response Theory follows on from them. Teachers can pick out single maps or decks to set as pre-reading.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the Planning and Designing Research strand of Research methods and academic skills. Open a resource, try a quiz, and add your own notes or flashcards where the set has gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the mind map Measurement of behavior. It covers the scales of measurement, measurement error and the idea that an observed score is a true score plus error. Once that is clear, the flashcard deck Chapter 8 Measurements walks through the measurement process step by step.

What do the validity resources cover?

There are mind maps, flashcards, slides and quizzes on validity. They include construct validity, internal and external validity, threats to validity and a slide set on five types of validity. The quiz Validity Lecture 3 tests constructs and how a measure can miss part of them.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so styles and depth vary. Skim a few on the same topic and pick the one that suits you.

Who are these resources suitable for?

They are almost all at university level, so they suit university students in research methods, and teachers looking for ready-made material to share or adapt. Students can use them to revise, check understanding of reliability and validity, or prepare for assignments.

Does the page cover test construction?

Yes. You will find the mind map Twelve steps for effective Test development, the quiz Test Construction and a flashcard deck on test construction. Scale construction 2 adds practical points on duplicate cases and missing data. Together they take you from drafting items to checking them.

What if a topic I need is missing?

Make your own. A free account lets you create quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes, and saves your quiz scores. You can also use a similar resource here as a starting point and rebuild it around your course's wording and examples.
