MLF: Topic 6 - ICT and learning

1. GUI (Graphical user interface): Microsoft Windows is an example of GUI.

2. DTE (Desktop Environment): Can be customised by changing icon sizes, mouse settings and adjusting sizes of windows.

3. Print settings: A menu of options often offered when something is printed.

   • Options may include:
     • pages to print.
     • number of copies
     • which printer to use

4. CAL (Computer assisted learning): a way to learn a skill using a computer or interactive software.

5. Application Software:

   • DTP software can help pupil's present work
   • Spreadsheets can be used to create charts and organise numerical data
   • Databases can be used to store, search, sort data and produce reports

6. Distance learning: Means studying from home, using online learning, web pages and then taking and then taking an exam online.

   • Advantages:
     • You can learn anywhere at anytime
     • Learning can be done at own pace
   • Disadvantages:
     • No tutor to discuss problems
     • Students feel isolated

7. VLE (Virtual Learning Environment): a software system that uses the internet to support teaching and learning.

   • Advantages
     • Learning takes place at any time
     • Teacher does not need to be present
   • Disadvantages:
     • Training- needed to set up VLE
     • Time - for answers to arrive
