Chapter 10 - The Baker Farm

  1. Thoreau was srtolling through Baker Farm. It began raining, so he went to find a nearby hut and met John Field.

    • John Field, an Irishman, and his family, have been waiting out the storm.
      • Very honest, hardworking, but unambitious.
        • Thoreau then tells them about the simple life, and they do not have to work hard to support themselves.
          • Thoreau describes the difficult life to maintain and they're not interested in changing their lifestyles.
            • Thoreau leaves the hut stating, "Good Genius" seeming to celebrate his adventures and independent spirit.
              • This urging kein to "Grow wild according to thy nature."
  2. This chapter demonstrates the Salt Reliance being shown. How Thoreau lived on very little, not rely for anyone or anything to provide anything for him whatsoever.

    • Walden clearly is independent, and relies on himself fully.
    • Creating his own entertainment and derived pleasures from the nature that surrounded him.
  3. Occasionally, Thoreau ventures off beyond the ponds to survey land.

    • After getting caught in a rain storm on a fishing trip, and taking a cover in presumely empty farm, he not only finds John Fields but notes that he is a poor Irish immigrants.
      • He gives a lecture on how he can pull himself out of poverty by reprioritizing his needs. (wild state of nature is best)
        • "Only true American" is one without luxuries.
          • butter, tea, and coffee.
      • He concludes that irishman is not interested in taking risks and is unable to see his wisdom (unfair specviation and no sympathy)
