   • Biphasic waveforms deliver current that flows in a positive direction for a specified duration before reversing to a negative direction for the remainder of the electrical discharge

   • Optimal energy level unknown
     • trance myocardial current flow achieves the defibrillation.  Current correlates well with successful defibrillation.   Transthoracic current during defibrillation is in the range 15 to 20 amp for approximately 10 ms
     • historically defibrillators developed in one phase it current,, one direction.   They have been superseded by biphasic defibrillators.
