Electromagnets

1. A wire carrying a current has a magnetic field around it

   • Magnetic fields show the strength, shape and direction of the force.

2. The magnetic field around a solenoid has the same shape as the field round a bar magnet

   • The magnetic field inside the solenoid can be used to magnetise magnetically soft metals
     • The strength of the magnetic field can be increased by: Using a larger current. Using more turns of wire on the coil, using a 'soft ' iron core, bringing the poles closer together

3. Electromagnets are used in many things such as:

   • The electric bell
   • Doorbell
   • Electromagnetic relay
