1. INTRODUCTION

2. WATER-BASED FLUID

   • FLUID TREATMENT
     • the machine and workpiece need to be protected from corrosion
       • the swarf generated must be separated and recycled or sent for disposal
       • lubrication properties can be improved through the addition of oily compunds
     • foaming must be prevented
     • water quality needs to be controlled for use with emulsions

     • petroleum-based hydrocarbons
       • combinations of parafins, napthenes and aromatic oils
     • employed in cutting and grinding fluids
     • extreme pressure additives are added
   • SYNTHETIC OILS
     • derived from hydrocarbons
     • more expensive
     • purer and produced for particular properties
     • organic esters, silicones and halogenate organic compunds
