Dynamic routing

  1. Dynamic routing protocols

    • Overview of the dynamic routing protocol
      • Dynamic routing protocol components
        • The purpose of dynamic routing protocols includes the following: -Detection of remote networks -Keep the routing information updated -Choose the best path to destination networks -To be able to find a better new road if the current route is no longer available
      • Dynamic routing protocol evolution
        • As the networks evolved and became more complex, new routing protocols emerged. The RIP protocol was updated to RIPv2 to make room for growth in the network environment.
    • Dynamic and static routing comparison
      • Uses of static routing
        • Static routing has several main uses, including: -It facilitates the maintenance of the routing table in smaller networks in which it is not expected to grow significantly. - Performs routing to and from an internal route network, which is a network with a single default route out and without knowledge of remote networks. -Allows access to a single default route (which is used to represent a route to any network that does not have a more specific match with another route in the routing table).
      • Advantages and disadvantages of static routing
        • The disadvantages of static routing include the following: -It is not easy to implement in large networks. -The administration of static configurations can take a long time. -If a link fails, a static route cannot re-route traffic.
      • Uses of dynamic routing protocols
        • Dynamic routing protocols help the network administrator to manage the rigorous and slow process of setting up and maintaining static routes.
      • Advantages and disadvantages of dynamic routing
        • Dynamic routing has disadvantages. This routing class requires knowing additional commands. In addition, it is less secure than static routing, because the interfaces identified by the routing protocol send routing updates outside the network. Routes taken may vary between packages. The routing algorithm uses additional CPU, RAM and link bandwidth.
  2. RIPv2

    • RIP protocol configuration
      • RIP configuration mode on the router
      • Network Ad
      • Verify RIP routing
      • Enabling and verifying RIPv2
      • Disable auto summary
      • Passive interfaces configuration
      • Propagate a default route
        • To propagate a default route in RIP, the perimeter router must be configured with the following: A default static route, using the ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 command.
  3. Routing table

    • Parts of an IPv4 route entry
      • Routing Table Entries
      • Inputs connected directly
      • Remote network inputs
    • IPv4 routes discovered dynamically
      • Routing Table Terms
        • The routes are analyzed in terms of the following: -Final route -Level 1 route -Level Route 1 -Secondary Level 2 Routes
      • Final route
        • Directly connected routes, dynamically discovered routes and local routes are final routes.
      • Level 1 Route
      • Primary Level 1 Route
      • Secondary Route Level 2
      • Route Search Process
      • Better route = longer match
  4. Analysis of an IPv6 routing table

    • IPv6 routing table entries
      • The components of the IPv6 routing table are very similar to those of the IPv4 routing table. For example, it is completed with directly connected interfaces, with static routes and with dynamically discovered routes.
    • Inputs connected directly
      • The directly connected routes shows the following information: -Origin of the route: identifies the way in which the route was discovered. Directly connected interfaces have two route origin codes ("C" identifies a directly connected network, while "L" identifies that this is a local route). -Red directly connected: the IPv6 address of the directly connected network. -Administrative distance: identifies the reliability of the origin of the route. IPv6 uses the same distances as IPv4. The value 0 indicates the best and most reliable origin. -Metric: identifies the value assigned to reach the remote network. The lower values indicate the preferred routes. -Output interface: identifies the output interface used to forward packets to the destination network.
    • IPv6 remote network inputs
