   • Some truth is found in books
     • Books are needed to reach spiritual perfection
   • Society's "sleepers" do not take advantage of literature
     • Society does not provide the essentials for the "sleepers" to awaken

2. Values

   • Thoreau throws away his past values
     • First step towards spiritual perfection
   • Calls for a social reform
   • Dedication to classics & authors such as Homer & Aeschylus
     • Aids in the road to spiritual perfection

3. Rebirth & Awakening

   • Proposes dedication to reading from authors such as Homer & Aeschylus
     • Promises it will bring spiritual rejuvenation
   • Society is spiritually dead
     • Society only reads popular fiction, half-hearted literature forms shabby minds
