Inquiry-Based Learning

  1. "Inquiry" is defined as "a seeking for truth, information, or knowledge - seeking information by questioning."

  2. It starts by posing questions, problems or scenarios.

  3. The process is often assisted by a facilitator (Teacher).

  4. Inquirers (students) will identify and research issues and questions to develop their knowledge or solutions.

  5. Inquiry-based learning includes problem-based learning, and is generally used in small scale investigations and projects, as well as research.

  6. Specific learning processes that people engage in during inquiry-learning include:

    • Creating an argument and justification for the explanation.
    • Explaining the evidence collected.
    • Obtaining supporting evidence to answer the question(s)
    • Connecting the explanation to the knowledge obtained from the investigative process.
    • Creating questions of their own.
  7. Inquiry-based learning can be done in multiple formats, including:

    • Field-work
    • Investigations
