1. Functions

   • Manage control devices
   • Provides a user interface
   • Hide the complexity of the hardware from the user
   • Deals with errors
   • Provides interface between applications software and hardware
   • Allows the instillation of new software and hardware
   • Utilities for virus scanning, encryption e.t.c.
   • Handle the storage of data
   • Maximise memory use
   • Autoomatically recognise new hardware
   • Organise resources when tasks are being worked on simutaniously

2. Types of user interfaace

   • Graphical user interface -WIMP
     • Advantages
       • No specialist language needed, get a mouse and go!!!!!!!
       • use of icons allows beginners to get to the programs or items they want.
     • Disadvantages
       • No memory needed for a computer to operatwe
       • Increased processed requirements are needed to run the gui
   • Command line
     • Advantages
       • Quicker than going through all the different windows
     • Disadvantages
       • Difficult for beginners
       • Instructions have to be remembered
   • Voice driven
     • Known as voice recognition, issue commands to the software and operating system. Can enter data into the application software
   • Menu/dialog boxes
   • Touch sensetive
     • Devices where there is no need for a keyboard e.g. Mp3 players, Mobile phones, Information kiosk, notebook, tablet, computers, Point of sale systems
   • Biometric
     • Instead of passwords, finger prints are used to gain access, automatically recognise and allow access

3. Operating sytems are software used to control the hardware directly used t orun the applications software

4. WIMP- Windows, Icons, Menus and pointers
