1. Guru Nanak

   • Birth - born in 1469 in Pakistan 1) instead of crying he smiled around room 2) strange light surrounded his birth 3) wise man came to visit
     • he spent a lot of time with monks instead of work. monks were shocked by his intelligence and questions - philosopher and poet
       • The term guru means teacher. He said neither mulsim or hindu path was correct but to follow gods path. ALL HUMANS ARE EQUEL to god and label does not matter.
         • common meals in common kitchen . on guru nanaks bday people read the sikh holy book for 48 hours in teams and there is processions lead by singers, musicians and martial arts demonstrators
           • when he dies there was arguments over whether muslims or hindu should get his body but when they put flowers on him to see whose would last longer body disappeared and only body was left - should be cremated or buried
             • sikh has origin in the word sanskrit meaning disciple. people gather and pray in the river ravi. guru nanaks main teachings were that there is only one god and all humans are equal and all have access to him with no need for rituals or priest
               • sikhs were fighting monghals

   • Kara >>> Iron bangles/ Bracelet
   • Kachera >>> Uniform shorts ( very big )

3. Guru Granth Sahib

   • THE GURU GRANTH SAHIB IS THE ETERNAL SIKH HOLY BOOK
     • IT ACTS ACTS AS A SPIRITUAL GUIDE TO SIKHS TO HELP THEM LIVE A HOLY LIFE
       • IT CONTAINS WRITINGS FROM MANY GURUS AND OTHER SAINTS
         • it is kept in all Gurdwaras and most sikh houses
           • overall it has 5867 hymns and 1428 pages
             • technically it is living and the scriptures could change
               • finally, the guru granth sahib was put together by guru gobind singh
           • Gurdwara = sikh place of worship
