Third conditional

  1. If + past perfect, would have + past participle

    • The past perfect tense = had + past participle
      • If he had gotten up earlier, we would not have been late. (Third conditional - We were late in the past). The first sentence is the mixed conditional, which mixes something that was not fulfilled in the past with its hypothetical result now: the first part is the third conditional and the second part is the second conditional.

  3. If he had studied harder, he would have passed the exam.

    • If you had told me about the meeting, I wouldn’t have missed it.
  4. Mixed Conditional

    • If + subject + past perfect, subject + would + verb in the infinitive
      • the condition or if-clause and the main or result clause. Depending on the meaning we try to convey we have many different conditionals at our exposal to express ourselves clearly.
    • This type of mixed conditional refers to an unreal past condition and its probable result in the present. These sentences express a situation which is contrary to reality both in the past and in the present
      • If I had worked harder at school, I would have a better job now.
        • I would have a better job now if I had worked harder at school.
