POLYSEMY

  1. Polysemy is characterised as the phenomenon whereby a single word form is associated with two or several related senses.

    • Polysemy occurs when a word form carries more than one meaning.
      • Sharing the same orthography and phonology, also share some semantic connection, in other words, whose different senses are semantically related
  2. Types of polysemy

    • Regular polysemy
      • The words have a systematic relationship, between them
        • referencias: Vicente,B.(2016).Polysemy((1 ed).Universidad del país vasco.
    • Irregular polysemy
      • The systematic relationship between the different meanings does not exist.
        • Divides further into two categories that usually have a metaphorical relationship between the senses.
    • Radial Polysemy
      • One definitionis at the "center" of it all, the other definitions radiate outwards.
        • Definitions are all directly related to one another.
    • Chain Polysemy
      • The various possible definitions are linked to eachother via a chain of definitions.
        • Here, definition A is not directly related to definition C, but via definition B it is.
