Miscible/immiscible
Immiscible liquids can be separated using a separating funnel. When you open the tap, the lower liquid runs out of the funnel and can be collected in a beaker. You then close the tap before the other liquid starts to run out. Put another beaker under the funnel the open the tap to allow the other liquid to be collected.
Miscible - two liquids dissolve in each other to form a solution.
- Can only be separated by fractional distillation.
- Mixture is heated and the liquids evaporate. Vapours condense in the fractionating column.
- The fraction with the highest boiling point - bottom.
- To do this to gases, they have to be liquefied by cooling the air so the water can freeze and be removed. The remaining air is then cooled to -200.
- The liquid air is warmed to -185. Nitrogen rises and oxygen piped out bottom.
