Barriers to effective communication

1. Language

   • Different people speak different languages
   • Different phrases mean different things to different people
   • Deaf people communicate using sign language and lip reading

2. Background Noise

   • A slight noise such as a clock can distract your audience

3. Distractions

   • someone walking into a meeting late or leaving early, the arrival of the tea trolley or a mobile phone beeping can interrupt the flow of thought of an audience and they could stop listening to you

4. Lack of Concentration from audience

   • Short speeches are easier to concentrate on than long lectures
