Understanding and Defining the Problem

  1. Understanding the Problem

    • Central Concept: Without a clear understanding of a problem, it cannot be effectively solved.
      • Nature of Problems
        • Complexity
        • Perception
      • Stakeholder Communication
        • Surveys: Large-scale, structured, but potentially shallow insights.
        • Interviews: Personal, deeper insights but limited in scale.
          • Types: Formal to conversational, structured to semi-structured.
          • Best Practices: Avoid leading questions, pilot testing, recording.
          • Limitations: Memory bias, response bias.
        • Observations: Rich context, time-consuming.
          • Approach: Observe in real context, master/apprentice relationship.
          • Recording: Audio, photos, notes.
          • Limitations: Very time-consuming, hard to generalize.
        • Secondary Research: Utilizes existing insights from other sources.
  2. Defining the Problem

    • Central Concept: How to turn raw data into insights.
      • Key Ideas: (1) Patterns in ways people describe problems. (2) What is causing the problem. (3) Problem consequences. (4) Changeable aspects of the problem.
        • Forms of Knowledge
          • Goals and Values: What are people trying to achieve?
          • Personas: Fictional characters representing different types of users.
            • Details: Demographics, goals, needs, frustrations, etc.
          • Scenarios: Specific situations describing how personas interact with solutions.
            • Details: Who, what, when, where, why, how often.
        • Articulating the Problem
          • Persuasive Argument
            • Show the scale and consequences of the problem.
            • Provide context and detail.
          • Purpose of Articulation
            • Convincing Others: Stakeholders, team members, investors.
            • Boundary Object: Helps different groups understand the problem and its importance.
