Super Smash Bros Algorithm
Prescribed Criteria
- Develop an Algorithm using Pseudocode conventions
- Develop an algorithm for Super Smash Bros or Mario Kart.
- Pseudocode conventions must be used. All keywords must be in bold and capital. When a code is a part of another line of code, it must be indented. The keywords, START and END should be used to signify the beginning and end of the algorithm,
- Keywords for Pseudocode – IF/IF ELSE, IS EQUAL TO, START, END, THEN, WHILE, INPUT, OUTPUT, DECLARE, SET, ENDIF, REPEAT, ENDWHILE, ENDFOR, FOR, TO
- Super Smash Bros
- Develop an ultimate high damage finishing offensive strategy to eliminate the opponent.
- Develop an ultimate high damage strategy
- The strategy should be focused on offence, so defensive counters are not needed.
- The moves should eliminate the opponent.
- Use five (5) conditions (IF, ELSEIF, ELSE) in your pseudocode
- The pseudocode must consist of 5 different moves to finish the opponent, using IF, ELSEIF and ELSE.
- Develop an ultimate high damage finishing offensive strategy to eliminate the opponent.
- Develop an Algorithm using Pseudocode conventions
Algorithm Constructs
- Sequence
- Sequence is a set of instructions that are followed one step at a time. It is crucial for the steps to be in the correct order, otherwise the algorithm will not work properly. Without any another algorithm constructs, it is a linear flow from start to end.
- Example for Final Smash: START, INPUT Kick your opponent into the air, INPUT Throw Pitfall at them, INPUT When they land on the ground and are immobilised, use both of your fists to smash their head in one strike, OUTPUT message “Congratulations on defeating your first opponent!”, END (This sequence is the steps that are followed for the final move to defeat the opponent)
- Sequence is a set of instructions that are followed one step at a time. It is crucial for the steps to be in the correct order, otherwise the algorithm will not work properly. Without any another algorithm constructs, it is a linear flow from start to end.
- Assignment
- An assignment is creating a variable and assigning it a value. The variable is like a name or label that stores information.
- CharacterHairColour = Pastel Purple (The variable name is CharacterHairColour and the value assigned to it is ‘Pastel Purple’)
- An assignment is creating a variable and assigning it a value. The variable is like a name or label that stores information.
- Selection
- A selection statement helps the algorithm make decisions by choosing between different actions instead of running instructions in order. What happens next depends on what the selection statement chooses.
- THEN dodge their move (The algorithm makes the decision for the character to dodge their opponent’s move when the condition has been met)
- A selection statement helps the algorithm make decisions by choosing between different actions instead of running instructions in order. What happens next depends on what the selection statement chooses.
- Condition
- A condition is the question that is answered and evaluates true or false. For the selection to happen and for the program to move forward, the condition must be met.
- IF the opponent uses their final smash (The condition is that the opponent has to use their final smash for the program to advance)
- A condition is the question that is answered and evaluates true or false. For the selection to happen and for the program to move forward, the condition must be met.
- Iteration
- Iteration is used to repeat something until a condition is met or a certain number of times is reached, so the program goes in a loop. A FOR loop is used when it is known how many times to go round the loop. A WHILE loop is used when a condition is true or false. A REPEAT loop is used when the number of repetitions is unknown and the condition is evaluated at the end of the repetition/s.
- START, DECLARE penalty points, SET penalty points to 0, WHILE the opponent is still on the stage ADD 1 to penalty points, OUTPUT Number of penalty points collected, END (The condition is that the opponent has to be on the stage for penalty points to keep being added, so the program goes in a loop until the condition becomes false)

Chosen Character Moves
- Giga Bowser Punch
- Bowser transforms into Giga Bowser and warps into the background, growing to an enormous size. Then, he delivers a punch straight into the targeted area. After the hit, he transforms back into the standard Bowser.
- 40% damage
- Bowser transforms into Giga Bowser and warps into the background, growing to an enormous size. Then, he delivers a punch straight into the targeted area. After the hit, he transforms back into the standard Bowser.
- Forward tilt
- Bowser does a swung back-handed punch with his arm slightly bent.
- 13% damage
- Bowser does a swung back-handed punch with his arm slightly bent.
- Up Smash
- Bowser hops and thrusts his shell upwards while spinning. It also grants damage-based armour his shell invincibility.
- 22%/16% damage
- Bowser hops and thrusts his shell upwards while spinning. It also grants damage-based armour his shell invincibility.
- Whirling Fortress
- Bowser goes into his spiky shell and spins rapidly to slice through the opponent.
- Can deal up to 32% damage
- Bowser goes into his spiky shell and spins rapidly to slice through the opponent.
- Flying Slam
- Bowser claws at the opponent and he leaps high into the air, controlling where they drift forward (in the fall too). He does a flip mid-air and slams the opponent hard into the ground.
- 18% minimum damage, 23.4% maximum damage
- Bowser claws at the opponent and he leaps high into the air, controlling where they drift forward (in the fall too). He does a flip mid-air and slams the opponent hard into the ground.
- Giga Bowser Punch

Hardware
- Joycon remote
- Joycon remotes are the wireless game controllers for Nintendo Switch. They come as a pair (a left and right controller), and can be used together or individually.
- Nintendo Switch
- The Nintendo Switch is a video game console where you can play many different games, like Super Smash Bros and Nintendo Switch Sports.
- Screen
- The Nintendo Switch can be connected to a TV screen to play the game on a larger screen.
- Joycon holder
- A joycon holder is a plastic accessory that combines the left and right joycons into one big controller.
- SSB game card or downloaded game
- The SSB game card and downloaded game are the two different ways to play Super Smash Bros. The game card is a thin, plastic object that you insert into the game slot of your Nintendo Switch and the game data is stored directly on that card, while downloaded game is from Nintendo eShop and is saved into your console’s memory or microSD card.
