1. Economic Activity

2. Service Provision

   • the large num of people puts pressure on essentail services eg water, sewerage

3. Informal Settlements

   • urban authorities cannot keep up with housing demand so new migrants are forced to join earlier migrants informal settlements. No legal right to occupy the land. 1/3 of city dwellers in LEDCs live in informal cities
   • Crudly constructed. Prone to dampness due to poor drains : 60% of dwellings are regarded as substandard
   • Mostly in 3 main locations: agricultural lands surronding the city. Rundown parts of the city and in refuse tips (the Zabaleen)
