3 Modes
- Mode 1 - non secure
  - All other devices have full access
  - Protects no services
- Mode 2 - service level enforced security
  - implements security at the level of each service
  - any authorisation or authentication must happen after the channel is established
  - Initiated after the channel is established
  - Protects select services
- Link level enforced security
  - Security enforced at the link level
  - initiated before the channel is established
  - Protects all services
Each Bluetooth device has a unique public device address = BD_ADDR
- Similar to MAC
