Security methods and Biometrics

  1. Biometrics

    • Is the recognition of an individual by a unique physiological or behavioural characteristic.
  2. Types of Biometrics and secruity methods

    • Palm print recognition
      • 1. The user keys in their identity number using the palm reader keyboard. 2. They then place their palm into the device as shown as the image. 3. The system checks that the palm print matches the user's identity number and authorises entry by unlocking the door. 4. The door remains locked if the system does not detect a valid match between the user's identity number and the palm print.
    • Fingerprint recognition
      • The user simply puts their index finger on the reader sensor, the computer system atomatically permits access where there is a match between the fingerprint and a fingerprint image on the system. In this cas, the user does not need to enter an identity number.
    • Iris scanning
      • These devices require the user to look at a camera that will input an image of their iris. The computer system will compare the image of the iris with other images on a database and will authorise access when there is a match. Facial recognition system works in a similar way.
    • Speaker recognition
      • Other biometric identifiers that can be used for access control are behavourial characteristics, such as speaker recognition or typing rhythm. Speaker recognition is where the speaker is identified by a voice pattern, in other words who is speaking; this is not to be confused with voice recognition software that identifies what is being said.
