With the dependency on electronic devices, there is now a need for easier and more convenient charging solutions. With the inconvenience that each device needs a specific charger, if you carry around 3 different devices, you will need to carry around 3 separate chargers. Then, you need to find a wall outlet, which is not always easily found.

Charging solutions to these problems with wireless charging. It has a similar technology to electronic toothbrushes.

(INDUCTIVE CHARGING) Inside the charging mat, there's a coil of wire. When electric current flows through the coil, it creates a magnetic field. When the magnetic field reaches the second coil inside the mobile device, it turns back into electrical current and charges the battery.

Inductive charging

is the use of electromagnetic fields to transfer energy between two objects. Induction chargers typically use an induction coil to create an alternating electromagnetic field from within a charging base station, and a second induction coil in the portable device takes power from the electromagnetic field and converts it back into electrical current to charge the battery.

Advantages of inductive charging:

Protected connections – no corrosion when the electronics are all enclosed, away from water or oxygen in the atmosphere.

Safer for medical implants – for embedded medical devices, allows recharging/powering through the skin rather than having wires penetrate the skin, which would increase the risk of infection.

Durability – Without the need to constantly plug and unplug the device, there is significantly less wear and tear on the socket of the device and the attaching cable.

No e-waste

Non radiative energy transfer

Conductive charging is conductive power transfer to eliminate wires between the charger and the charging device. It requires the use of a charging board as the power transmitter to deliver the power, and a charging device, with a built-in receiver, to receive the power. Once the charging board recognizes the valid receiver, the charging begins.

Conductive power transfer uses a conductor to connect two electronic devices in order to transfer energy. In the area of cellular phone chargers, phones are equipped with an attachment such as a sleeve which, when placed on the charging board, transfers energy to the phone's battery. This method is efficient for wireless power transfer and eliminates concerns about radiation.

Conductive charging requires a physical connection between the electronic device's battery and the power supply. The need for a metal-to-metal connection between the charger and the device requiring charging is one of the main drawbacks of this method. To accomplish this without the use of physical cords connected to wall outlets, special attachments are made from electronic devices which are fitted with technology that can detect when the device makes connection with the power source, often a charging base. Conduction based wireless accessories may include changeable backs for cellular phones, special sleeves and attachable clips. The electronic devices, fitted with these accessories, are simply placed on the charging based. The base is able to detect when a compatible device has been placed on it and begin the battery charging process. These charging bases are usually designed to be able to distinguish between human and metal contact so that there is no risk of electrocution.

Wireless charging with cars:

Nissan in Japan has given a glimpse of the very near future in the form of a wireless charging station for its Leaf electric car.

Present electric vehicle charging technology requires the connection of a cable to the vehicle to recharge its battery via mains electricity.

Now Nissan has developed a wireless charging pad that recharges the battery simply by parking the vehicle on top of a ground transmission unit.

Much like the charging system on electric toothbrushes, the Nissan wireless charger works by electromagnetic induction. Electricity is drawn from the recharging coil in a housing mounted on a garage floor and into contacts inside the vehicle.

Charging your EV is something you never have to think about. You simply drive into the garage at night, park squarely over the charging pad, and leave the car to charge itself. By morning the car is fully charged and you're on your way.

The system is 90 per cent as efficient in power transmission as a cable system, meaning it will charge the car in about eight hours.

Experts say there's no physical danger if a child or animal were to crawl into the 150mm gap between the car and the transmission unit as the unit transmits at a low three-to-six kilowatts.

Researchers in Korea reportedly are already working on an electric bus powered by a continuous inductive connection with a cable buried in the road.

The scenario of induction highways that allow EVs to make intercity journeys without stopping to recharge may no longer be the stuff of science fiction.
