Bleeding point

Give a reasoned account of the measures you employ where there has been a small bleeding point during a clinical treatment.
The clinician will immediately wash their hands and put on a pair of gloves. This process reduces the clinician's risk of infection. A packet of sterile gauze should be sourced from the contents of the unit and opened, exposing the gauze squares inside. The gauze square should be applied to the wound and pressure applied distally. This will arrest the bleeding. If required, the limb should be elevated by altering the position of the patient's chair. When the bleeding has been arrested, the lesion will be covered with a temporary sterile dressing until the treatment has been completed. This minimises cross contamination. A final sterile dressing will be applied immediately after the treatment has been completed. To be effective, the dressing requires to be sized correctly to cover the whole wound and adjacent tissue, and be securely retained in place. The patient should be advised to keep the dressing dry and it can be removed after 24 hours.
1. Before applying the final dressing, the clinician should wash their hands and put on new gloves.
2. A packet of sterile gauze will be sourced from the unit contents and a pair of sterile scissors will be obtained.
3. A 2.5cm broad strip of mefix will be cut to the anticipated length of the gauze to be applied and will be rounded at both ends.
4. With the paper backing partially removed from the mefix, it will placed on the right handside of the unit's surface (clean area).
5. The packet of sterile gauze will be opened exposing the gauze squares inside.
6. Post-operative medication such as Videne or Inadine gauze will be applied directly to the wound.
7. Using sterile forceps the sterile gauze square will be lifted from the packet.
8. If required, the gauze will be cut to the desired size using sterile scissors.
9. The gauze will be held against the wound using the forceps.
10. The previously cut strip of mefix will be applied distally 1/2 on the gauze and 1/2 on the skin.
11. The remaining periphery of the gauze will be secured using similarly sized and shaped mefix strips.
