Character Analysis
Eddie Carbone
is a tragic protagonist in A.V.F.T.B.
Eddie is 40 years old, an American of Sicilian decent. He is described as "a husky, slightly overweight longshoreman."
He is master of the house.
Eddie is slightly wary and self-protective or selfish.
He is overprotected of Catherine.
He doesn't trust people easily.
He believes he must protect her from marriage or any male relationship(Rodolpho).-- he wants her for himself.
Cares about only himself, if he care about her he would let her go and not keep her in a cage like a bird.
In some parts of the play we see that Eddie's love for Catherine may not be normal.
--when Catherine lights the cigar for Eddie it is an unusual pleasure.
Beatrice is the first person to see this when she has her conversation with Catherine.
Alfieri also realizes Eddie's feelings during his first conversation with Eddie.
He is a bully.
The conflict that ends his life recalls other conflict we have seen:
-verbal conflict, with all the other characters at some point or another. He's jokes are as bitter.
-physical conflict, with Rodolpho
-conflict within himself, as he grapples with his love of Catherine.
Beatrice Carbone
She is Eddie's wife. She has never had children of her own so cares for Catherine as if she was her own daughter.
She is loving and caring person.
She supports Catherine and encourages her to be independent.
Alfieri
is an Italian American.
Is the symbolic bridge between American law and tribal laws
From his narration, it seemed that Alfieri has decided to tell the story for his own reasons as much as anyone else's.
He informs us what is happening in the story.
Rodolpho
the platinum blonde is a cooking, sewing and dancing full-blooded Italian, and also the greatest threat to Eddie Carbone.
The play does not tell us about Rodolpho as an individual until Beatrice and Catherine, who talk a little about him.
There are many questions left unanswered including:
-his sexuality
-his love for Catherine
-and whether he actually forgives Eddie at the play's conclusion.
It is clear that he wants to be an American citizen at all costs and it is clear he doesn't love Catherine
The audience really never even knows if Rodolpho truly loves Catherine.
