Developing a Paragraph

A typical paragraph has a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence.

A topic sentence consists of a topic and a controlling idea. It MUST'NT be a simple fact or a specific detail.

The controlling idea in the topic sentence should be supported, explained, or demonstrated n the supporting sentences, BUT, it shouldn't be too general either. FE:

A surprise party is a kind of party (too general)

My classmates gave me an unforgettable surprise party for my 15th birthday. (correct/effective)

Every time you tried to construct a paragraph, ensure the clarity of the text.

Supporting sentences can include definitions, explanations/general information, and examples.

A concluding sentence is typically a rephrase sentence of the topic sentence. For example:

TS: I love the color red

CS: I like to live life in a strong way, so I think I will always admire the color red.

It can also represent the following

A reminder/consequence -> for not following the steps/process as stated in the supporting sentences.

A prediction -> the outcomes/events that follow the explanation as explained in the supporting sentences

An opinion -> could be the author or the general opinion about the topic.

Unity and Coherence

A paragraph has unity when all the sentences support a single idea. (controlling idea in the TS).

The supporting sentences must support or explain the controlling

idea with examples, details, steps, or definitions. Otherwise, the

paragraph will not be about one single idea.

The concluding sentence should restate the idea in the topic sentence. Otherwise, the main idea might not be clear

A paragraph has coherence when supporting details are organized/put in good sequence. It can follow the order of time, locations, or importance of events.

Practice time

My friend and I agree to celebrate valentine's day together in the park near our dormitories. We opine that valentine's day can also be celebrated with friends whom we adore and love, and it is not only for the romantic couples out there. We plan to eat some meals such as bread, cheese, and light snacks. I think my friend will bring her laptop for us to entertain ourselves in that park. It would be a good idea to watch a romance film where the protagonists receive a red rose or a heart-shaped chocolate box from his or her lovers. I think a lot of people will also come to the park on that day, so we need to go there early to save our spot. Nevertheless, I think we would spend a great time in the park.
