CPU
.CPU - central processing unit
.function of the CPU is the fetching and executing of instructions stored in memory
.brain of computer
.gets all its info from the RAM and stores in its own temporary memory
.CPU then decodes (works out) what it is supposed to be doing and the instruction given to it is then stored in a register
. the CPU Fetches (from RAM and stores in temporary memory), Decodes using ALU (arithmetic logic unit) and then executes the instruction given out (stored in register) then repeats.
.CPU contains a number of microprocessors - makes it faster and less strain on 1 processor + enhanced performance reduce power consumption and is more efficient - multitask
. multi-core- 2+ processor
.each core in a multi-core has cashes (stores temp memory)
. 2 levels of cashes
.LVl 1 is a memory bank built into CPU chip
.LVl 2 is a secondary staging are that feeds LVl 1 cash
.cashes are static RAM (don't move) while the main memory generally stores dynamic RAM (does move).
