In order to achieve address simplification and conservation, Layer 3 forwarding devices use Network Address Translation (NAT), which is established in RFC 1631.
Common use of NAT is to connect networks using private RFC 1918 network addresses to the public Internet.
NAT translates the private addresses that are used in the internal network into public addresses that can be routed across the Internet.
You may set up NAT to utilize a single address for the whole network to the outside world as part of this capabilities. The internal network is effectively hidden when just one address is used, adding extra protection.
