- 1The Earth's Early Atmosphere:The Earth's atmosphere forms a layer of air around our planet and is vital for life on earth, without this we would have no oxygen to breathe and temperatures would be too cold for life.
- 2Mixtures, Elements and Compounds: GasesThe air in the atmosphere consists of two elements: nitrogen and oxygen.
- 3What is an element:An element is made of only one type of atom.
- 4What is a compound?A compound is made from two or more elements that are chemically combined together.
Example : Water and Carbon Dioxide. - 5The Atmosphere:The Atmosphere is a mixture of elements and compounds (N^2 and CO2) It is a mixture because different substances are not chemically combined together. The atmosphere is about 100 km thick and 3/4 of the mass is within the first 11 km.
