Book 22

It all begins when Antinous gets shot with an arrow by Odysseus.

Shortly after the killing, Odysseus gives a speech on how angry he was that his return was not anticipated.

Then, war breaks out between Odysseus and the suitors, and Telemachus brings armor to Odysseus.

The fighting continues, but Melanthius betrays Odysseus and Telemachus by managing to get into the storage room and providing armor and supplies to the suitors.

Athena makes the suitors miss their shots.

Telemachus hangs Melanthius for his betrayal.

Euryclea, the nurse, is asked to retrieve the twelve misbehaved house maids to assist in cleaning up the corpses.

Following the cleanup, Telemachus hangs the women for their association with the suitors.

Melanthius’ intestines are then thrown and fed to the dogs.

Odysseus asks Euryclea to notify Penelope of his return and bring forth sulfur to burn in a fire in order to rid himself of the odor of the corpses.

Book 23

The story continues with Euryclea informing Penelope of her husband’s return, a matter that Penelope does not immediately believe.

In fact, Penelope begins to become angry at Euryclea for telling lies.

But Penelope eventually sees Odysseus in person, and she is at a loss of words.

Upon taking a look at his wife, Odysseus decides to go and shower.

When he returns, Penelope tests Odysseus by referencing a special bed that he created with specifically detailed materials.

Penelope realizes that he is indeed Odysseus, and they embrace.

Odysseus explains his whole journey to her while she listens with her full attention.

They then order for music to be played to try and fool the citizens that Penelope had gotten remarried.

Odysseus and Penelope sit down and continue to converse for a while.

Odysseus tells Penelope to not let anyone in, and he leaves with Telemachus to find his father, Laertes.

Book 24

The messenger god, Hermes, takes the dead suitors into the Underworld.

There, Agamemnon and Achilles praise Odysseus’ victory over the suitors.

The story then picks up at the reunification scene of Odysseus and Laertes.

Odysseus disguises himself as a king to test Laertes’ memory, and they discuss matters.

Finally, Odysseus reveals himself and proves his identity by explaining the story behind his scar.

While Laertes and Odysseus head on their way back, the families of the dead suitors come to Ithaca to mourn over the loss of their loved ones.

Athena infuses strength to Laertes, and he then hurls his spear at Eupeithes, Antinous’ father.

The men are about to fight, but Athena warns them to make peace with each other as to not anger Zeus.
