1.1 Given a scenario install and configure laptop hardware and components

Hard ware /device replacement

Consult the documentation from manufacturer

Some models need a t-8 torx screwdriver

Might be countersunk in deep holes

Always ensure you are grounded

Keyboard

Try not to damage the data cable connector to system board

Hard Drive

Back up the old drive before swap

SSD vs hybrid vs magnetic disk

Many devices still use a mag disk hard drive

Most are moving to solid state or hybrid

Solid states are not as susceptible to damage if dropped and are generally faster

CON: more expensive, don't display as many warning signs as other physical drives

Hybrids have a magnetic disk and some solid state memory. These monitor the data being read from the hard drive and cache the most frequently accessed bits in the high speed flash memory. Needs to be learned to see te improvement

1.8 in vs 2.5 in

The 2.5 in hard drives are small (laptop good) but in comparison to 3.5 in, they have less capacity and cache and they operate at a lower speed

2.5: 5400 to 7200 rpm/ 2.5 W power used

3.5: 7200 to 10000 rpm. /5 W power used

1.8 very small. Only used in subnotebooks and audio players

Memory

There should be a panel used for access to the memory modules. If not, refer to documentation

Smart Card Reader

Come in internal and external versions.

External probably plugs into USB, may need a driver

May use the express card slot

Internal readers will reside in a drive bay as a hard drive or optical drive.

To replace:

Optical Drive

Easier than hard drive or memory

Remove the screw that secures the drive to the bottom of the notebook.

Grab the edge of the bezel and slide the drive out of the base enclosure.

Insert the new one into the base until the connector is seated and replace the screw that secures the drive to the bottom of the notebook

Wireless card/ Bluetooth module

Both wifi and bluetooth wireless cards that are built in can be replaced if they go bad. Sometimes they reside near the memory, so you would open the same panel.

Other times, you have to dismantle memory, keyboard, optical drive and hand rest to get

Not always together, consult the docs

Once you've found the card, disconnect the two antenna contacts from the card.

DO NOT PULL BY WIRE

Pull by the connector itself.

Remove any screws from the wirelss card and gently pull out by the slot.

Insert the replacement at a 45 degree angle and reconnect the antenna to the adapter. Reverse

Cellular card

Changing an external broadband card is as simple as pulling the old usb stick out and plugging in the new one.

USB is plug and play: you shouldn't have to do anything further

Sometimes there is a CD or downloads

Changing an internal is very similar to a wifi adapter, follow above

Video card

Ensure that the new card was supported by the laptop and the OS

Mini PCIe

Since many of the wireless cards are mini-pcie, replacing any other card in this format will follow the same steps.

Documenation for location.

Screen

One of the harder ones

DC Jack

Replacing a bad dc jack usually requires soldering== if you can't, just replace the mobo

Remove all the parts to get to the mobo

In some cases, the old one can be used, the old solder just needs to be removed

If not, remove the old dc jack by unsoldering it from the connector. Then put the new jack in and solder it to the connectors.

Probably just replace the mobo

Battery

Remove the battery storage bay, remove batter, insert and replace the bay.

**WARNING** If bitlocker is enabled, the laptop will not boot after replacement unless the key is provided

Touchpad

Another complicated one

Plastic/ frames

May be hold in place by screws or snaps.

Never force a piece

Restoring the full case is important. Leaving open spaces can tamper with circulation, resulting in overheating

Speaker

Remove hard drive, battery pack and the screws holding the body together

System board

Remove everything prior to these notes.

CPU

If it is not built into the mobo, it can be replcaed. If it is integrated, then just replace mobo.

If upgrading and not just replacing, make sure BIOS supports the new one.

May need to flash the BIOS to support

Follow the above notes for removing the case, keyboard and display.

As always, follow documentation from manufacturer

1.2 Given a scenario, install components within the display of a laptop

Types

Laptop displays are

-LCD: have replaced CRTs as the default display type for laptops and desktops.

Two major types are used:

-active matrix screens:

Uses a separate transisitor for each individual pixel in the display, resulting in higher refresh rates and brighter display quality. Use ore power.

There is a variant called thin-film transistor TFT uses multiple transistors per pixel, improving quality further.

-passive matrix screens:

Row of transistors across the top of the screen and a column of them down the side. It sends pules to each pixel at the intersection of each row and column combination, telling it what to do.

Becoming obsolete because the're less bright and have poorer regresh rates and quality. PRO: they use less power

Main difference is quality, both use some kind of lighting behind the LCD panel to make the screen viewable. One or more small fluorescent tubes are used to backlight.

TN vs IPS

Two majorkinds of LCDs

Twisted Nematic (TN): twisted nematic is older of the two for flat panel displays.

In-Plane Switching (IPS):

Fluorescent vs LED backlighting

LCDs can use two kinds of backlighting:

Characteristic

Flurorescent

LED

Size

Thicker and heavier

Thinner and lighter

Cost

Webcam

If replacing, will need to disconnect the laptop lid from the base. Remove the screw covers and screws holding the display bezel in place and remove the screen from the lid assembly.

Carefully remove the tape and remove camera

Attach the replacement cable to the new camera and reverse

Microphone

Many desktop systems lack a built-in microphone, almost all laptops have one.

Sometimes the microphone will be located on the laptop bottom

Sometimes it will be in the display next to the webcam or off to the side.

If needed to replace, follow the same steps on the webcam

When you unhook lid from bottom, unplug cables from the board and one of those will be the microphone cable.

Sometimes the cable can be cut by the constant opening and closing of the case

Inverter

Component that takes DC power and converts it to an AC form that can be used by the LCD screen

Implemented as a circuit board that is located behind the LCD

Problems with flickering display or dimness occur, the inverter is probably the problem

If the inverter needs to be replaced you should be aware that it may contain stored energy so it may need to be discharged to be safe.

Digitizer/ touchscreen

Digitizers:

Exam essentials

Differentiate the types of displays available in laptops

Two major types of LCDs are used

Active matrix screens and passive matrix screens

Describe the location and operational characteristics of the wireless antenna in a laptop

Located in the display

Moving the laptop changes the polarity of the antenna

Identify the location and function of the inverter

An inverter is a component that takes DC power and converts it to a form that can be used by the LCD screen

Implemented as a circuit board behind the LCD

1.3 Given a scenario, use appropriate laptop features

Special function keys

Docking station

Docking stations or port replicators

Cheapest form of docking station is port replicator

Physical laptop lock and cable lock

Also called a Kensington lock

Rotating/ removable screens

Many devices today have a removable screen ( Kinda)

Actually just unhooking the keyboard
