Intro Inspector calls

• An Inspector calls was written by Priestley and set in 1912, before the first world war, is a murder mystery with a twist. During the book we are shown a part of each character’s story which gives us the ability to understand the main theme in the text, each and every person is responsible for each other. Priestley uses setting, language and characterisation to allow us as the readers to fully understand the importance of community and the true weight of our decisions on other people. The plot begins with the engagement party of Sheila Birling, the daughter of a very important business man and Mr Gerald Croft, the son of their main competition. In each scene Inspector delves into the part each character had to play in the chain of events that led to the death of Eva Smith. Each member of the party did some form of wrong to the girl which is discussed by the inspector; from unfair dismissal, jealousy, selfishness, taking advantage to plain lack of empathy. The inspector encourages each member to take full responsibility for their actions and the effect it had on her life. When he leaves Mr and Mrs Birling are all too eager to forget and continue living their life exactly as they had been, unlike the younger Birlings are who are shaken and fully accept their responsibility for her suffering.
