Sound Waves + Frequency

• Sound is produced when an object or material vibrates forwards and backwards
• The frequency of a sound is the number of vibrations per second. The frequency of a sound is the pitch.
• Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz)
• Pitch is how high or low a note is and depends on the frequency of the vibrations causing the sound.

Sound Waves

• Sound energy is passed from one molecule to another like a baton in a relay race in the form of waves.
• Sound travels in longitudinal waves.
• Longitudinal waves means the vibrations which create the noise all move back and forth.
• A vibrating object pushes against air particles creating a compression.
• The particles then spread out from each other (this is known as a rarefraction)
