MEMORY

The models of memory:

• 1. The multi-store model including the concepts of encoding, capacity and duration.
• 2. Strengths and weaknesses of the model.
• 3. The working memory model including its strengths and weaknesses.

Memory is a complex and varied phenomenon

• The history of research on the memory can be tracked back to ancient times.
• Plato thousands of years ago constructed an analogy and in some respects have not changed into the modern era
• Plato likened human memory to an aviary with memories flying around inside. A new bird can be captured and added to the aviary (placing a new M into storage), and at a later date the bird can be captured in a net and removed (retrieval of a M). Inability to capture a bird or its escape from the cage are analogies for the two processes of forgetting.
