Updating, deleting and searching records

• Update - change the data to bring up-to-date.
• Delete - remove data no longer needed.
• Search - look for specific records that match certain criteria

Search criteria using operators

• = equals
• > greater than
• < less than
• <> not equal to
• >= greater than or equal to
• <= less than or equal to

Joining operators

• operators can be joined by AND or OR
• e.g. size = XL AND Type = shirt
• Pet = Dog OR Pet = Cat

Structure of data

• Data - unprocessed information - 01012011
• Information - Data that now has a meaning - 01/01/2011
• Field - an item of data or a fact - a surname

Structure of data cont.

• Record - The detail relating to the single thing or person - Name, address, number.
• Table - Where the information is found - rows(across) are usually the record in a database.
• File - a collection of related records - all the students in a school.

Searching for information

• Search engines - google and others are used to search the internet for information.
• Queries - They are used to search databases and find records.

• The ID or club number in a database is a keyfield. You have a keyfield because it is unique.
