  1. 1SymbolismIn Macbeth, Shakespeare utilises the dagger and the bloody hands of Macbeth to symbolise the GUILT of murder.
Prior to this Macbeth's thoughts had led to him seeing the imaginary dagger covered in blood leading to Duncan's chamber.
  2. 2Metaphor"look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under it" Lady Macbeth said to Macbeth and this is telling him to act normal and then take advantage of the mislead.
  3. 3Irony"He that's coming must be provided for" Lady Macbeth is saying this in front of Duncan, Macbeth and various other guests. To Duncan, the guest, this means a warm welcome however, to Macbeth this shows they have means to murder him.
  4. 4SituationalTowards the beginning of the story Macbeth and his lady believe that the murder of Duncan will lead to their happiness however, the outcome is that they become tormented and cursed by their terrible deeds in dreams/illusions.
  5. 5FoilsBanquo and Macbeth are foils to contrast and highlight their personalities.
  6. 6Paradox"Fair is foul and foul is fair"
This contradicts itself but still seems true as it is coming from the mouth of the witches.
  7. 7ConclusionIn conclusion Shakespeare uses all of these devices to:
Establish a very morbid and mysterious tone using metaphors, irony, paradoxes and foreshadowing.
And also to show how evil deeds no matter how hidden will always come back to haunt you
