Japan and the US Britain and the US had been behind the expansion of power in Japan. First attempts Japan successfully defeated Britain ships, but it was just thing of time that the American Giant entered.
July 8 1853 Commodore Perry arrives with 4 warships. Japan´s Shogun surrendered although the major resistance, opening 2 ports to US trade
Tokugawa Yoshinobu (Keiki) He was the last shogun. He sufferen under all the pressure during the American attacks. He wanted to modernize Japan in several aspects but for some reason several clans were oposed to that, forcing him to resign in 1867.
Later the US followed with more treaties. Japan signed the Treaty of Amity and Comerce (1858) but that was opposed later by nationalists that wanted to continue the seclusion and advocated "Repelling the Barbarians"
